2023 season outlook
With an injury riddled 2022 season behind us, the Sacred Heart baseball team looks to get back into contention moving into 2023. Veteran leader Mike Dawe who was a workhorse on the mound and in the field looks to improve on his 2022 numbers and lead the team both offensively and defensively. Giuliano Trombatore is the Taysom Hill of the YRAA. A player who will do what it takes to help the team and in doing that, he lead the way with a 0.00 ERA, a team lead for strikeouts. Kai Hernandez is the left handed ace in the hole who should be able to pitch in the playoffs but will anchor the middle of the lineup and various spots on the infield during the regular season. All are back to lead the way in the 2023 campaign
Our Jr. class is finally healthy. Jack Comper and Ethan Burgess both had great summer seasons after recovering from shoulder injuries and will be staples in the middle of the lineup. Chris Castellanos had a decent sophomore season, hitting .333 and playing some outfield, Nathan Jagger has shown some impressive improvement in his outfield range after hitting .400 over the 2022 season. Austen Sherman is back and brings not only the team lead in HBP but a .429 BA and team lead in runs scored. Gianluca Volpe was a regular starter last season leading the team with a .500 batting average and living at the top of the lineup. The team will look to Gianluca to contribute in many of the same ways he did last year. Jacob Moses and Ian Sheppard round out the Jr. Class and will be back to complete for YRAA starting jobs showing last year that they are on base machines.
When it comes to Sophomores, Mateo Tomais is the only returner. Mateo bailed out the team after the injury bug (and fear of heat) dropped our 2022 roster down dangerously low. In his time with the team, he showed he is willing to help out and in 2023 he will be competing for a YRAA roster spot.
The rookie class: Jack Hastie (SR) gave effort every time he stepped on the field, the third baseman will be competing for an infield position during the pre-season and is a welcome addition to the team. Will Hamblin, a transfer SO, looks to step right in and compete for the starting catcher job while sprinkling in some time at 3B. Will showed well in the fall with a strong bat and good baseball IQ that he clearly did not get from his father. Three Freshmen are included in this year’s rookie bunch. Lucas Green, a 3b/C/P who will step in and compete immediately, had a great fall season and showed well in many positions. Andrew Bruce is a big strong kid with the potential to do a lot of damage as he continues to gain confidence in his genetically passed on abilities. His demeanor will keep him in games and he's got power for days when he gets the bat head out. Finally we come to Eric Lamana who is as cool as the other side of the pillow at 2b and will find some time in the OF in the preseason while we are sorting out our lineup. Lamana is a hard worker with a love of the game that mirrors that of Billy Chapel.
The 2023 season will start off at the Saint Andrews College Invitational Tournament followed by a pair of exhibition games before we slide from there right into YRAA play in early May.
Cam Busby looking to lead the team....
12th grade Senior Cameron Busby (photo right) sat down with reporter Park Bench Molgrievy for a candid one on one interview about the upcoming season.
The senior is taking his first crack at baseball after leading the hockey team into the playoffs. "Clearly I'm the best player on the hockey team and I just hope that translates to success on the baseball field." Said Cam enthusiastically. Cam has had some time off from baseball since winning the MIP at the little league world series when he was just 11 years old. Since then he has grown both physically and mentally elevating his game to just above the house league level. When asked how he thought he could better the team he simply answered "In every way because everything is awesome....everything is cool when you're part of a team..."
Clearly Busby has worked hard and caught the eye of Coaches Zeagman and West. "We really just took him because he has a car" stated Zeagman..."I just put him on the list so he would stop bugging me" replied West.
Whatever way you look at it Busby is looking to make the most of his shot as a senior. The pre season rankings should be out soon and everything points to him ending up as one of the top 30 left fielders in the division.
The Crusaders are hoping to kick off the season with a trip to Windsor before heading back to compete in the YRAA regular season in May.
