Since April, 48 STL students, making up 6 Robotics teams, have been diligently working to prepare their robots for the VEX Robotics competitions. On Saturday, November 23rd, all six STL robots made their debut at the York Region VRC Qualifier tournament. All teams represented STL with pride. Of the six STL robots competing, three were able to make it to the elimination rounds, comprised of 24 teams. Everybody including the staff, executive team, and the members have been relentlessly at work preparing for this tournament. This year’s Tower Takeover game provided numerous challenges with building the robot, especially for many inexperienced members. However, the determination of the team resulted in hours of commitment each meeting; designing and programming the robot as well as repeating the process in order to perfect it. The team embodied the little way, ensuring that every group had a working robot for the competition and displaying great sportsmanship. On the day of the tournament, the STL Robotics team was faced with many formidable opponents and obstacles. Three teams managed to secure a spot for the playoffs and the 82855G robot was victorious and were named the tournament champions, advancing to the provincial competitions. This championship is the first in STL Robotics history!! Congratulations to the entire team, Yaseen Abbas, Kian Ashrafganjouei, Brian Cho, Brian Grigore, Ryan Kordmahalleh, Mani Pahlevani, Thomas Valer, and Harry Xu. The results of the Newmarket tournament proved that with persistence, perseverance, and hard work, our team was able to overcome any obstacle in its path. The battle is far from over and the team will continue to utilize their skills and collaborate in order to further advance in this world-renowned Vex competition. Mr. Morrison and Mrs. Cammalleri would like to congratulate all STL Robotics Team members for their extreme dedication and hardwork! All teams have put in an immeasurable amount of hours, which has resulted in fantastic results! We look forward to our future competitions, and the Provincial Championship.
During the months of September, October and November, the E.S.P. & S.O.S. Committee has organized activities and displays focused on promoting school safety and healthy lifestyle choices. In September, informational booths were created for fire safety, pedestrian safety, and drivers' safety. S.O.S. created a Kahoot that dealt with aspects of mental health, such as the importance of sleep, time management tips, and suitable amounts of caffeine students have each day. In October, our Halloween display was based on true horrors. Students were given information on how using drugs or alcohol and vaping can lead to physical, mental and emotional problems. S.O.S. showed the dangers of addictions: drugs & alcohol, video games, and social media. For National Bullying Awareness Week, Nov. 18 to Nov. 22, E.S.P. and S.O.S. invited Youth Speak to present to our grade 10 students. The message of being kind and respectful to one another was clear. Our events included a blue shirt day, random acts of kindness day with the smile squad, pinky swear day to stand up against bullying, and thumbs up for anti-bullying. Officer Rob and our E.S.P. members spoke to all our grade 9 students about choices and consequences. We will continue to spread positive messages throughout the year so that students will stay safe and happy.
