IJCB 2025 Special Session
Tackling Safety Issues in the Emerging Cybernetic Avatar Era
Overview
In an era of accelerating virtualization, the emergence of cybernetic avatars—digital or robotic agents acting on behalf of humans—presents both unprecedented opportunities and profound security challenges. This special session explores the technological, ethical, and social dimensions of securing avatar-mediated interactions, with a strong focus on real-world deployments and future societal integration.
Anchored by Japan’s Moonshot Research and Development Program, one of the world’s most ambitious national initiatives, the session highlights efforts to realize a society where everyone, including the elderly and individuals with disabilities, can participate through avatar technologies by 2050. The session is led by researchers directly involved in these initiatives and brings global attention to the next frontier in identity management, biometric authentication, and safe human-avatar interaction.
Speakers
Invited Talk
Prof. Masakatsu Nishigaki (Shizuoka University), a leading figure in Japan’s Moonshot project, will present a visionary keynote on future cybernetic society and avatar safety.
Contributed Talks (Call for Papers)
Selected presenters will be chosen through an open Call for Papers (see below). Researchers working on biometric security, identity management, human-avatar interaction, or related domains are strongly encouraged to apply.
We welcome submissions related to (but not limited to):
Biometric authentication in avatar-mediated environments
Continuous and multimodal identity verification
Identity delegation and management for avatars
Spoofing prevention and avatar hijacking detection
Social engineering and trust in human-avatar interaction
Behavioral biometrics for avatars
Security architectures for avatar-based systems
Legal, ethical, and privacy considerations in avatar use
