birds CHARACTERISTICS

Who are they? - General curiosities

They are oviparous animals, which means they are born from eggs.

They have two legs and two wings that allow them to fly. Although there are some birds that don't fly, like penguins. While a bird that can fly is the eagle, he is the fastest animal in the world!

They are warm-blooded and they eat with their beaks because they have no teeth. Their body is covered in feathers and they have muscles.

Where do they live and eat?

Birds live in a wide variety of habitats, like yards, grasslands, mangroves and wetlands.

Birds have adapted amazingly to almost every environment, from the cold zones of the poles, to deserts and aquatic environments (according to the species).

Young birds develop in the nest. However, when they grow up, they leave the nest.

They eat seeds, fruits, insects, plants and nectar and they can be insectivourous or carnivourous, such as falcons, eagles, vultures and owls.

Process of migration

Migratory birds fly to warmer climates. They migrate because they are insectivourous (which means they eat insects). But when it is cold, insects hide. Because of this, birds migrate in autumn and spring.

They don't migrate alone but with folks. And they migrate from north to south following the routes.

How can we protect them?

We have to protect birds... but how? There are several actions that we can take to help them:

1. Mark windows

2. Do not buy birds illegally

3. Create small habitats, like bird houses

THE REASONS OF OUR PROJECT

How important is SDG 15: Life on Land?

A flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet. We are all part of the planet's ecosystem and we have caused severe damage to it through deforestation, loss of natural habitats and land degradation. Promoting a sustainable use of our ecosystems and preserving biodiversity is not a cause.

Why we wanted to do this project?

  • Raise awareness of the "Life on land" topic and show the life of birds.

  • Educate children in order to contribute to a better future for all.
