SCHOOL CONTEXT

IES Galileo Galilei is a secondary school located in the neighbourhood of Nou Barris, a working class' quarter with limited economic assets.

This has more than 400 students and, as it is a high complexity centre since last year, the number of teachers increased to 51. Also, this is the second year the school gets an English Language Assistant, who helps with the CLIL project and with the improvement of the students' English level.

More than the 50% of the pupils are from other countries, mainly from South America, and also, during all the academic course some newcomers are arriving. For this reason, the main language used for pupils at school, as well as in the neighbourhood, is Spanish. About the use of the other languages, as the Catalan and English, the first one is rarely heard and spoken, and about the second one, it is important to know that for most of the newcomers is the first time they are in contact with the English language.
