We think that the implementation of the activities we proposed was really good at the group class of year 5. They really enjoyed the activities we proposed and the new technologies we used such as Interactive whiteboard (IWB), chromebooks, computers and the apps we used such as mentimeter, kahoot…
The students worked hard and remembered a lot from the previous lessons. All of them demonstrated eagerness to learn.
For the students that needed extra help, we think it was important to prepare the extra vocabulary and samples and focus on them, when doing individual activities. For these students, we needed to start with the specific information.
We also encouraged the more timid students to practise and participate when speaking. Cooperative work helped these students to increase their participation in the activities proposed. We think it was good to include lots of communicative activities.
At the beginning, we felt quite insecure about how will be the lesson, but the students were encouraged and happy to participate and for us, as teachers, helped a lot to keep on with the activities and feel more confident when talking, specially because when you record yourself, you feel a bit stress as you will get evaluate.
Once we finished the first session, in the rest of the lessons that we had recorded, we felt more comfortable.
From the beginning, the students started participating and felt comfortable when they got told that we went to record them. The laughter and interactions at the end humanised what had started out to be a structured, dry lesson.
We could actually sense that learning was taking place and that we were directing that learning. From our experience we learned that we need to spend less time on explanations and get right into the practice activities. They were more effective than reading a presentation or a story as they got more involved. We also realised more than ever the importance of being flexible. Even though we had the activities prepared and planned, we should adapt them to the students and the moment.
