In 1933 only 33% of the population had voted for the Nazis and yet 3 years later it appeared thats support for them was widespread.
This photograph was taken in 1936 at the launch of a new Navy ship in the city of Hamburg. The crowd salutes the Fuhrer - Hitler- using the outstretched arm or Hitlergrusse (Hitler greeting).
Look closely at the image- one man stands arms folded in protest.
He was called August Landmesser
Landmesser openly defied the Nazis because he fell in love with a Jewish girl- she was killed in a death camp after having his two children.
Landmesser was killed in action after being forced to fight in German army.
This is just one example of opposition to Nazi rule.
The system of terror relied on intelligence being gathered by the SD (Sicherheitsdienst), the Gestapo (Secret Police), as well as reports to these groups by German citizens. This is video shows an example of how the Gestapo worked:

Cult of Hitler
Many of the posters created by Goebbels aimed to create a cult of personality surrounding Hitler .
The authoritative stance and the determined shepherd-like portrayal of someone leading the people aimed to trigger the Authority Bias in the German people .

How effective were the opposition?
Now that you have read about the different opposition groups, place them on your matrix grid depending on how effective you think their opposition was. You have the information to look back to, so you can just write the name of the person or group where you think it goes.
There is no right or wrong answer – the skill is your ability to justify your decisions.
Consider:
Was their opposition political (trying to change how Germany was run) or social (resisting measures to make them conform to the Nazi way of life)?
Did their actions affect lots of people or was it personal resistance?
What do you consider to be ‘success’? Changed Germany? Continued their resistance throughout the war? Distracted the Nazis? Didn’t get killed?
