GCSE Revision
INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES
GCSEs and other vocational qualifications are an important part of your son or daughter's mission. Mastery of the knowledge and skills within these qualifications prepare students for the next stage of their education at Post16.
These pages are designed to give families practical advice on how to provide useful support so that students are motivated, prepared and healthy during this time.
5 TOP TIPS for supporting revision
- Make sure that you are clear on what effective revision looks like
Effective revision needs to be active: e.g. quizzes, flashcards, drawing mind maps, summarising notes into bullet points, completing past-papers or exam style questions.
Re-reading notes or highlighting is NOT revising.
- Agree some ground rules
How much are devices needed? Where should revision happen? How can your child show you evidence that they have been revising?
A consistent routine is really helpful and proven to increase the chance of success. Agree a healthy bedtime (students need around 8-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep). Make sure your child is taking breaks too!
- Check-in with your child about their revision - listen lots and talk a little
Review how well revision is going, and check in with your child frequently about how their revision is going.
Get them to practise their flashcards with you.
Ask them questions about their revision e.g.:
"Show me an exam question that you are really confident/not so confident on and tell me why"
"Give me 5 examples of..."Â
"In this topic what are the 3 most important..."
- Be supportive! Lots of encouragement and the odd hug goes a long way!
