We understand that you wish to take a combination of subjects that you are really interested in... Your level of readiness is something even more important to consider!
We are excited to share with you the suite of subject combinations that Xinmin Secondary School will be offering to the 2026 Secondary 3 Cohort.
With this variety, you will be able to learn the subjects that you are passionate about and excel in them to progress to the post-secondary institution of your choice. You may wish to refer to the image on the right for a recap of the subject levels required for various pathways! Pathway-specific requirements will also be highlighted below.
1. Subject Combinations, Allocation Process, and Criteria
The subject combinations offered for the 2026 Secondary Three cohort are outlined on this page. These combinations have been meticulously designed with the following principles:
Compulsory subjects required for upper secondary in Singapore, i.e. English, Mother Tongue, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, are included in all subject combinations.
Subject combinations are aligned with requirements of post-secondary pathways to ensure that students find success in secondary school and suitable pathways thereafter.
An additional subject above the requirements of various post-secondary pathways is included so that students have options in computing their aggregate scores.
While looking at the various subject combinations, do note the following:
By default, students will offer all five compulsory subjects, i.e. English, Mother Tongue, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, at the level offered in Sec 2.
To offer a subject at a More Demanding Level (MDL), students would need to meet requirements specific to each subject at the end of Sec 2.
English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics or Science (G1 to G2, or G2 to G3) - Attain 75% for Sec 2 subject overall
Humanities (G1 to G2) - Attain 75% overall for G1 English (or 50% overall for G2 English) AND a Pass with Distinction for the two Performance Tasks in Sems 1 & 2 from G1 Humanities Social Studies Component
Humanities (G2 to G3) - Attain 75% overall in G2 History, G2 Geography, or G2 Literature in English
Students may have to meet other requirements for the elective subjects. The requirements are highlighted below for your reference.
As shared with students and parents at the start of 2025, the subject combination allocation process is based on the following factors:
eligibility criteria indicated below
number of places available, which is dependent on the school’s resources e.g. the number of available teachers to teach the subject
academic merit (i.e. overall Sec 2 results)
the student’s choices
demand: generally, there should be at least 15 students before a subject class is set up (e.g. if only 12 students opt for Subject X, Subject X may not be offered to that cohort)
6-Subject Combinations
Notes
1: For the 6-subject A-Level and Poly Year 1 Combination, English, Mathematics, Combined Sciences and Combined Humanities have to be taken at G3 level to meet minimum entry requirements as well as provide a sufficiently-wide range of options in JCs, MI, and polytechnics.
At the same time, while the A-Level and Poly Year 1 pathways require at 5 G3 subjects and 4 G3 subjects respectively, we encourage students to take another subject at the necessary subject level to provide more leeway in the computation of their aggregate scores. That is:
For students who intend to apply to schools offering A-Levels, all 6 subjects should be taken at the G3 level.
For students who intend to apply directly to Poly Year 1, students can take 5 G3 subjects and 1 G2 subject as the aggregate computation involves 4 G3 and 1 G2 subjects.
2: The criteria to take the 6th subject at various subject levels are in the table below.
7-Subject Combinations
Notes
4: All subjects in the 7-subject combinations will be offered at the G3 level. The criteria for the respective 7-subject combinations in the table below applies.
5: Students would need to attain the following to take the subject in the respective 7-subject combinations.
Art - 70% overall for Art for Sec 2 to offer G3 Art in Sec 3.
Drama - 50% overall for G2 English for Sec 2 or offer G3 English at Sec 3
Principles of Accounts - 50% overall for G3 English and G3 Mathematics for Sec 2
Additional Mathematics - 65% overall for G3 Mathematics for Sec 2
8-Subject Combinations
Notes
6: Students must be taking all subjects at the G3 Level in Sec 2 to qualify for the 8-subject combinations. The criteria for the respective 8-subject combinations in the table below applies.
2. Subject Combination Codes
The subject combination codes which will be used for the online subject allocation exercise in Term 4 will be updated closer to the exercise. Stay tuned!
