Alchemia 2017-18 was a platform for new ideas. This time, the goal was to reach the younger ones, school goers in the first stages of their fascination for the world of science. XAC believes education needs to reach all, and science can only progress if it finds powerful foundation in among its young enthusiasts. With this objective, Alchemia brought forth a series of talks on January 8, 2018, of the students, by the students, for the students. The talks were given by invited student speakers from the departments of Microbiology, Physics and Chemistry. School children were encouraged to attend these lectures on interesting topics like “Neurotransmitters” and “Quantum Physics for 7-year-Olds”, along with an exhibition involving many experiments and demonstrations in the chemistry laboratories. This, to the success and satisfaction of the team, served to spark an love for the field of chemistry among the wide-eyed little ones.
The events for January 9 began with a talk by Dr Roop Malik from TIFR titled “Molecular Machines”. This was followed by a quiz and Chem Housie. On January 10, events like Spell C and Treasure Hunt were hosted. 12 colleges from across Mumbai participated in these intercollegiate competitions featuring a wide array of events and exciting prizes. Alchemia 2017-2018 was concluded with the Prize distribution Ceremony, in which all winners, participants and volunteers received their certificates too.
