Welcome to Third Grade!
The start of a new school year is always so exciting!
What will we be learning this month?
Math
In September we will review everything you learned in second grade about addition and subtraction and place value. We often play games to help us review our math skills! Links to some great math games that can help you review your skills can be found under the math tab.
Reading
We will be getting into the swing of things by reviewing how to "Read to Self" (independent reading) and building our stamina. By the middle of the month we will be starting our first Journeys Unit. Check our reading tab for more information about our Journeys units and a link the Journeys Student Book!
Social Studies
In third grade we take students from learning about their own community in second grade to learning about communities around the world. In order for students to understand and appreciate these communities around the world, we begin in September with map skills and learning the continents and oceans. We would like each child to be able to identify the continent, country, state, and city/town he or she lives in.
Science
In third grade we talk a lot about "thinking like a scientist", which means making careful observations and recording those observations with descriptive words and pictures with labels. This month we begin our year of science by studying Rocks and Minerals. Students will learn about the different kinds of rocks and how they are formed. They will then be given a set of "mystery" minerals. We will conduct various experiments in order to find out what minerals we have in our set.
