What is an emoji? An emoji is a picture that we use on a device to express how we feel. This week we will watch Mystery Doug talk about How Were Emojis Created. Then, we will talk about how certain situations make us feel and ways that we can illustrate them using emojis. Students will access their own "Mood Meter" and draw three (3) emojis representing how they felt this morning, how they feel right now and how they think they may feel later today. Students can use crayons or PlayDoh to illustrate their emojis.
Some ideas might include feelings such as being happy, calm, sad, hurt, tired, silly, excited, anxious, surprised, scared, angry, etc. Have fun!

Welcome to the 2022 Hour of Code! The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to take the mystery out of "code" and to show that anybody can learn the basics of computer science. Today we celebrate this special week!
Week of November 28-December 2, 2022
This week we are going to continue with a unit on Coding that will bring us through The Hour of Code, celebrated the week of December 5-11, 2022.
Today, students will be introduced to a new website called Code.org. We will be doing some block coding together through a series of puzzles called Sequencing with Scrat. Then students will go to their seats and work independently trying to code each level. If they make it through all of the levels, the next one to be attempted is called Programming with Angry Birds.
Remember: the only way to learn how to code is to make a lot of mistakes and keep trying to fix them! Although it can be frustrating, it is all worth it at the end! I hope you enjoy!
Week of November 21-25, 2022

We recently celebrated Fire Prevention Week, a national event celebrated this year from October 9-15th, 2022. This week in the STEAM Lab we will continue to discuss how to be safe during a fire by creating an "emergency plan" to use at home. First students will be given markers to code a route that they can take from their house to an outside location. This is the place they will meet up with their family in case of a fire.
Once students are done with their pictures, they will have the OzoBots follow their coded route, if they didn't have a chance to use the tiny robots last week. While 5 people are at the MakerSpace table, the others will play either Fun4theBrain or Room Recess (which we will go over this week as well). You can also have fun at a new Halloween website!
Fire Prevention Week is a national event celebrated this year from October 9-15th, 2022. This week in the STEAM Lab we will do a number of things to honor this event. First, students will watch a BrainPop Jr. video on Fire Safety - we will discuss how to be safe in case of a fire, do the easy quiz and of course, Pop-A-Joke.
Then students will either go to the MakerSpace table and "code" a route out of their house in case of an emergency after which they will have the OzoBots follow their coded route. While 5 people are at the table at a time, the others will play Fire Safety games found at https://www.sparky.org/games or Brigade Kids.
This week in the STEAM Lab we will discuss the "Week of Respect". Students will first watch a Brain Pop Jr. movie on "Listening and Speaking" . Then we will do the short quiz and Pop-A-Joke as a group.
After, students will be introduced to Auto Draw . They will use this website to draw a picture representing something that deals with the Week of Respect. As a group we will discuss some ideas that they can draw/write about. We will also talk about how to put details into their pictures by adding colors and text.
Have fun!
This week we are going to do a few things in Technology.
1. We are going to learn how to bookmark a website using our Chromebook! Today, we are going to bookmark this website, the "Welcome to the 1st Grade STEAM Lab" so you can get to it easily whenever you are on your ChromeBooks. Look for the STAR in the URL bar to bookmark the webpage!
2. We will review how to open our class page on the Desktop computers.
