The Hidden Costs of Smartphones

The 2020 challenge will focus on graphene as a future sustainable material.

Your challenge has six parts:

  1. Explore the global significance of smartphone technology and investigate how your smartphone works.
  2. Explore the social, economic, and environmental impacts of smartphone raw materials mining, manufacturing, and disposal .
  3. identify impacts that could be addressed by new Ssmartphone materials and technology In any part of the smartphone product lifecycle.
  4. Analyze and evaluate new materials and technology that could mitigate the impacts that you identified.
  5. Use design thinking to identify the ways that smartphones could be made more sustainable.
  6. Collaborate with other students to create a 5-minute (maximum time) video that tells the story of your research and sustainability solution. You will be using Google slides and Loom. Your group will be invited to a shared Google drive for all collaborative work.

Respond to the student survey posted in Google Classroom. After survey results are posted in Google Classroom, analyze the response data. Add your analysis to your exploration journal.

  • How many smartphones have you owned in your lifetime?
  • What have you done with smartphones you no longer use?
  • How old were you when you received your first smartphone?
  • For what activity do you most frequently use your smartphone?
