Roald Dahl was born inn Llandaff, Wales on September 13, 1916. His parents were from Norway. His mother was told stories and had a fantastic memory to tell tales about trolls, mythical characters from Norway. Even though Roald Dahl was happy with his home life, he struggled with school life until he was 13-years-old and attended Repton Public School in Derbyshire. He was good at playing sports, and for fun, some kids asked him to test taste some chocolates. This inspired the story of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" later on in his life.
When Roald Dahl became an adult, he worked in Africa for an oil company, and later on enlisted in the Royal Air Force during World War II. After serving in the Royal Air Force, he began to have headaches that prevented Roald Dahl from flying planes. He was posted to Washington state in the U.S.A. where he met an author named, C.S. Forester, who suggested that Rolad Dahl write stories. Roald Dahl began to write articles for newspapers.
Roald Dahl moved back to England and married Patricia Neal, and lived in Buckinghamshire. Roald and Patricia had children, Olivia, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. He decided to write stories for his children. James and the Giant Peach was his first published book.
