IWMI is one of 15 international research centers supported by the network of 60 governments, private foundations and international and regional organizations collectively known as CGIAR. It is a non-profit organization with a staff of 350 and offices in over 10 countries across Asia and Africa and Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka. IWMI’s multidisciplinary team of 110 researchers provide technical expertise and science leadership in water quality and health, resource recovery and reuse from waste, amongst others. IWMI’s vision is a water-secure world and our mission reflected in our 2014-2018 strategy is to deliver water and land management solutions. The IWMI Strategy 2014-2018 outlines the rationale for the institute’s vision, together with the key actions IWMI will take to achieve this vision.
The Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR) Research Group is nested within IWMI’s Strategic Program on Rural-Urban Linkages. The RRR group has worked over 15 years on safe sanitation measures, which include developing reuse products from municipal solid waste, fecal sludge from onsite sanitation systems and safe wastewater use. The group has a multi-disciplinary team of economists, environmental scientists, health specialists and engineers who have more than a decade of experience in sanitation and waste management along with overall feasibility assessment and implementation of waste reuse solutions. Based on this decade of research on waste management and reuse in Africa and Asia, IWMI and its partners have been supporting a shift from waste treatment for disposal to treatment for reuse by:
