August 13, 2018

Greetings Upper Unit Families and Students,

The final few weeks of summer are upon us and the start to the 2018-2019 school year is fast approaching! Welcome back to our sixth graders and their families and a warm welcome to all our new fifth graders and their families.

All three of us have had wonderful summers finding time for professional growth as well as traveling, spending time with our families and friends. Like you, we are sad to see the summer come to an end, but we are excited to see old friends and develop new friendships.

Before our first days are suddenly upon us, we wanted to take a moment to mention a few things before the first day rolls around:

Summer Reading - While there are plenty of summer days remaining, school is around the corner. If you haven’t finished or even started one of the required summer reading books, Harris and Me or Love, Ruby Lavender, you should probably get started! If for some reason you misplaced your summer reading information you can visit our Summer Reading 2018 webpage and download the information. While there you can see some awesome ‘shelfies’. Send Heidi your own ‘shelfie’ so she can post it! (hringer@wwsu.org) Feel free to just create your own form to keep track of the five or more books you read over the summer.

School Supplies - We know that shopping for school supplies can be fun, therefore we have attached a list of supplies that will be needed and ask that these be brought to school on the first day (Monday, August 27). We will also have these supplies available at school if shopping is not in your schedule these next couple of weeks. We will provide all students with a pencil case that will fit into their binders. Items they typically keep in their pencil cases are: pencils, pens, colored pencils (we provide), pencil sharpener, a highlighter, dry erase marker, and their scissors. These tools will travel between school and home in their binders. We work with kids to be responsible and accountable for their materials expecting they will arrive in classes prepared with what they need.

We look forward to seeing you and sharing our vacation adventures. We are anticipating that the school year will be filled with equally exciting adventures.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,

Heidi Ringer (223-3668) hringer@wwsu.org

Elizabeth Tarno (496 –5126) etarno@wwsu.org

Julie Galati jgalati@wwsu.org

Riding SMOOTH at School!

By Warner

Recently, the Warren School received a trailer of bikes. How it was possible for us to get the trailer of bikes was Ross entered a lottery of sorts and he ended up winning. Our class has really been enjoying having the bike unit. The bike unit went on for two weeks. We were definitely sad when the unit was over but had so much fun. I interviewed a few people and this is what they said about the bike unit:

Kayden said, “I think it is a great unit because it is a chance to ride a bike and to have people who have not learned to ride a bike to have the chance to learn.”

Colbey said, “I think it is a great thing to keep you healthy and active at school. It also helps us learn how to check our bike before we go riding.”

Julia said, “I like it because we have never really done anything like this before. Also it is really fun and it is good because we get to play games and can ride our bikes for fun.”

Cailin said, “ I think it is really fun because kids get fresh air and they learn to do the correct bike signals so that when they are older they will remember it and won't get hurt.”

Did YOU like the bike unit?

HUUSD Chorus Concert

Tuesday, February 20th

Our Upper Unit chorus students joined their 4th, 5th, and 6th grade chorus classmates from other schools in our district to perform at the HUUSD Chorus Concert on Tuesday, February 20th at Harwood Auditorium . Following their performance, all Middle and High School chorus students performed.

The first part of the video features our very own Mrs. Adams directing the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in our district. The last part of the video features Stefanie Weigand, Harwood's Chorus Director, directing ALL chorus students in grades 4 through 12 as they sing, "Be the Change"

It was spectacular! OUR HUUSD Students TOGETHER can BE the CHANGE!!

No Skiing? No Problem!

On Friday, February 2, our Friday ski afternoon was cancelled due to cold temps. Yes, we were all bummed, but we made the best of it! We had an afternoon of Scrabble in the Upper Unit!

Sugarbush Visits The Warren School.

written by: Warner & Colbey

Just before the holiday break, Sugarbush visited the Warren School. They talked about how to be safe and responsible on the mountains. We even got a surprise visit from Murphy the moose!! They brought little billboards (signs) that reminded us how to start small on the train park and how to be safe in the terrain park. They talked about how, if we get lost on the mountain, we should go down to the bottom of the lift we were just on or to find somebody wearing a blue Sugarbush coat or to find ski patrol wearing black coats with white crosses. We are so happy that we got a visit with Murphy the moose and the crew of Sugarbush.

Friday ski program begins after our Winter break. Remember:

Week of Sept. 25

While Sugarbush was really fun, we all agree it is SO GREAT to be back in our own building! We are wasting no time getting into the full swing of things! We began our "Double E" time this week! Double E stands for Engineers and Explorers. During this time we have half of our Upper Unit students working with Heidi R. and Julie as they begin the Explorers unit (Social Studies). The other half of the students are working with Elizabeth and Jane as they begin the Engineers unit (Science). After about 5 weeks, we will switch groups so everyone will have a chance to be an Engineer and an Explorer! Here are a few pics of our engineers hard at work designing a foot orthosis:

Summer School for Teachers!

Heidi, Jane, and Elizabeth attended the Middle Grades Institute in June where we worked together to learn about and plan for personalized learning. We are really excited to continue our work together this summer to plan and implement new ideas for the 2017-2018 school year!
