Freedom to Read:
Here at The Moretown School Library, we support the belief that all students have the right to make their own reading choices according to their individual interests, preferences, and needs. The selection of books for the library is made carefully, purposefully and professionally. We incorporate reputable review sources, include student voice and anchor our collection with a knowledge of students ages, interests, and curricular needs. We strive to provide materials and support for every student.
Parents are highly encouraged to take an interest in what their child is reading. If possible please read with your child. There are many studies proving how influential this is for the development of your child. Also, have conversations about books, story and book choices. This is how your child will learn to be an independent reader and learner. The library is a magical and safe place for students to explore choices, build up the capacity to make responsible choices AND be responsible users, creators, curators and evaluators of information and materials. The library is open to check out books every school day.
The Moretown School Library also embraces the idea that families are diverse and have different belief systems as well as thoughts about what is appropriate for children to read. Our library strives to provide something for everyone. If your student comes home with a book that you feel is not appropriate for your family please talk with them about why it is not something you would like them to read. Also, please let the librarian and classroom teacher know so we can support your family decisions. What works for one family may not work for another family and that is why communication between the library, classroom, school and home is so important.
