Freedom to Read:
At HUUSD, we believe that all students have the right to choose their own reading materials based on their individual interests, preferences, and needs. The selection of books for our library is made with careful, purposeful consideration and professionalism. We use reputable review sources, incorporate student input, and base our collection on an understanding of students' ages, interests, and curricular requirements. Our goal is to provide materials and support for every student.
We highly encourage parents to take an active interest in their child's reading. If possible, please read with your child. Numerous studies show how influential this can be for a child's development. Engage in conversations about books, stories, and their choices. This interaction nurtures their ability to become independent readers and learners. The library serves as a magical and safe space for students to explore their reading choices, develop responsible decision-making skills, and become effective users, creators, curators, and evaluators of information and materials.
HUUSD also recognizes that families are diverse, with different belief systems and perspectives on what is appropriate for children to read. Our library aims to offer something for everyone. If your child brings home a book that you believe is not appropriate for your family, please discuss your concerns with them and explain why you feel that way. Additionally, inform the librarian and classroom teacher so we can support your family's decisions. What works for one family may not work for another, which is why communication between the library, classroom, school, and home is so important.
