REOPENING MODELS

In general, Westwood Regional students who will be participating in our hybrid learning model will be divided into two groups who will alternate between in person and at home learning experiences throughout the week. Students who remain home due to medical necessity or parental choice will receive their education remotely through teacher designed, facilitated, and supported learning experiences. The following images illustrate a sample experience. For more detailed descriptions, please select from the dropdowns below or reach out to your child's principal.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

All students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will receive a combination of on-site and remote instruction. This model includes separating our students into two cohorts, 1 and 2. Group 1 and 2 attend school 2 days per week and every other Friday from 8:50 a.m. - 12:50 p.m. On the day that a student will be home, there will be remote assignments and lessons provided by the teachers through videos and postings in Google Classroom.

AIM, Connect, Resource Room, and ELL students will attend school everyday M-F for half day. This model allows for prioritizing students who may require additional time extended to the half day for mandated related services, supports, and instruction. This model is also consistent with WRMS and WRHS, in order to assist parents with planning and preparation/child care.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • All students will have an opportunity to attend school within their classroom every other day and alternating Fridays for half days.

  • Consistency for students and families

  • Two standard groupings of children per classroom (50% of the class) attend each session.

  • Each period is reduced to 28 minutes

  • Specials’ form of instruction being considered/scheduled

  • All required programming of ELL and Special Education will be provided M - F. District level programming (i.e. Basic Skills) is being examined and planned.

  • Use of virtual reinforcement / instruction will be available each day to all children to provide face time with their teachers.

  • Champions before/aftercare options will be available for families and staff

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students will be divided into two (2) groups to attend alternately in-person and remote on different days. The in-person portion of the day will be a minimum session of four (4) hours, from 8:15 AM - 12:36 PM. During the on-site time, students will see their teachers on a rotating basis. On the day that a student will be at home, there will be scheduled check-in times, and remote assignments and lessons provided by the teachers through videos and postings in Google Classroom. This allows for students to see their teachers in person or via video conference on a daily basis.

Highlights:

  • Students will be present in school every other day (Monday thru Thursday), and on an alternating basis on Friday, aligned with K-5 and 9-12.

  • Provides students with more structure than prior remote learning.

  • Students will run through their entire schedule, in-person, over the course of a four day cycle.

  • Additional academic expectations in the afternoons.

  • Reduced capacity can allow for increased social distancing.

  • Students traveling through the halls will be minimized, based on the reduced number of in-person classes that run each day.

HIGH SCHOOL

Students will be divided into two cohorts (groups) to attend alternately in-person and remote on different days. The in-person day will consist of four periods and run from 7:55 AM - 12:11 PM (Approximately 1 hour per period). Two periods will be assigned each afternoon on a rotating basis (Approximately 35 minutes) for both groups. On the day that a student will be at home, there will be assignments and lessons provided by the teachers through videos and postings in Google Classroom. This allows for students to see their teachers in-person during their assigned day at school. This model is also consistent with WRMS and the elementary schools, as to assist parents with planning and preparation/child care.

Highlights:

  • Six periods will meet each day similar to our regular rotating-drop schedule.

  • Students will be present in school every other day (Monday thru Thursday), and on an alternating basis on Friday.

  • Provides students with more structure than prior remote learning.

  • Students will run through their entire schedule over the course of a four day cycle.

  • Students traveling through the halls will be minimized, based on the reduced number of in-person classes that run each day as well as only half the students being in the building at one time.

FULL REMOTE

On July 20, 2020, Governor Murphy announced that all parents would have the option to request a full remote learning experience during the current public health emergency. On July 24, clarifying expectations were issued regarding fulltime remote learning options for families requiring districts develop procedures for submitting fulltime remote learning requests and procedures to transition from fulltime remote learning to in person services. While we finalize the policies and procedures, please refer to the following framework to assist you in your decision making.

INITIAL REQUEST FOR FULL REMOTE

  • Upon completion of the September Reopening Family Survey, student schedules and remote learning teacher assignments will be determined by the administration. More information will be provide by the building administration.

REQUEST TO CHANGE FROM FULL REMOTE TO HYBRID

  • All requests must be initially submitted to the school principal.

  • October 2 will be the first opportunity to request to transition from full remote to the hybrid model.

  • Due to the significant effort to balance cohorts, classrooms, and teachers and accommodate sibling considerations, please count on the transition requiring up to 2 weeks. For example, if you request a transition on October 2, your child could be welcome able to begin in-person learning no later than October 12.

  • Assignment of classroom and teacher will depend on the status of existing cohorts; therefore there is no guarantee that your child will have the same teacher in-person as he/she had during remote instruction.

REQUEST TO CHANGE FROM HYBRID TO FULL REMOTE

  • All requests must be initially submitted to the school principal.

  • Requests to transition from the hybrid model to full-remote instruction will be processed as quickly as administratively possible.
