DURATION OF COURSE:Full Year
The understanding of different types of materials and how they can be processed is essential to being a good designer and engineer. In this class we will explore the four basic families of materials which include wood, metal, plastics, and ceramics. The use of metal, plastic, and ceramics will be largely learned through woodworking projects. Subtle interdisciplinary themes of numeracy, geometry, chemistry, and biology will be incorporated into the planning of projects. Processing of materials will be done so through the use of portable power tools and Woodworking Machines. The course emphasizes correct and safe use of equipment. This course builds foundational skills for Materials Science and Processing II where larger more complex projects are built using more diverse tools and materials.
