Dear Parents/Guardians:
To facilitate recalling homework assignments and to place one less stress on your child's remembering his/her speech homework, I've discussed and reinforced a routine with your children, and that is: I am asking that speech notebooks or folders are returned to your child's backpack upon completion of homework so that they come back to school every day and go back home everyday on a regular basis, regardless of speech class day. Also, to avoid NOT completing homework assignments, it is recommended that your child do his/her homework on the day he/she is assigned the homework---if possible. Of course, this is not to say that speech homework should be practiced only on Speech days. In fact, I strongly recommend reinforcement and drill of speech homework whenever your child has some downtime. While it is not set in stone, if your child practices a routine of reviewing homework assignments at least three times a week, for even as little as 10 minutes, this will both maximize and expedite progress, as this will facilitate both retention and generalization of learned skills--I have seen this to be true through my evidence-based practice over the years.
Finally, if the Speech Folder does not come home the same day that your child has speech, this means that I am still preparing homework assignments. Rest assured that your child will get his Speech Book/folder with the next assignment or before the next speech class.
The importance of homework assignments remains two-fold: to review and reinforce skills and to facilitate generalization of those skills across various communication contexts or environments. Homework is one more facilitating link to your child's mastery in his or her speech goals and objectives! It is given as deemed appropriate and/or necessary.
Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to jot me a note in your child's Speech Book/Folder. This can also serve as a communication log between us.
Once again, I call to your support in facilitating progress in your children. Your partnership remains a critical, success-yielding component in your child's movement forward. Thanks for all your efforts!
