Our classroom has so many exciting things for the students, one of them being the "word wall". At the beginning of the school year, we will get involved in lots of games and activities to practice the many red words our students learned in kindergarten and first grade. Each week after, we add a few new high frequency words to the wall. The children are expected to recognize and spell each of these words. We practice learning them through various activities in the classroom. We will incorporate movement into the learning of these new "red" words. Please check in with your kids and ask them to "arm tap" their red words each week. Another great way to practice at home is by reading a story to your child and having them point out the sight words they are learning that particular week. Kids love building their red words with magnet letters, drawing them in sand or rice laid out on a cookie tray, or even building them with playdough. This is very exciting for them! The following is a list of words that your child will learn to read and write this year. Please note that these words are not necessarily listed in the order that they will be learned and that additional words may be added to this list at any time throughout the year.
