Welcome to the World Language Department at the Westwood Regional School District.
All of our elementary school students at receive one period of Spanish Language and Culture instruction each week. When students enter Westwood Regional Middle School, each sixth grader takes both a semester of Spanish with Ms. Tome or Ms. Sarmiento, and a semester of French with Ms. Charles. In 7th grade, students have the option to either specialize in French with Ms. Charles or Mr. Welfel, or continue learning Spanish with Ms. Sans, Ms. Cardenas, or Ms. Sarmiento, or Ms. Tome. In 8th grade, students either continue with Spanish and French instruction, or start their exploration with the Italian Language and Culture with Ms. Durso.
At Westwood High School, students can build upon their knowledge of French with Mr. Welfel or Ms. Meringolo, Spanish with Mr. Thomas, Ms. Lifrieri, Ms. Buccola, Ms. Sigona, or Ms. Sandoval. In addition, students may opt to learn Italian with Ms. Radici or Ms. Durso. Four levels of French, Italian, and Spanish are offered at the high school along with an honors track. In addition, students may enroll in the AP French, AP Spanish, and AP Italian Language and Cultures courses.
World Language instructors at the high school incorporate best practice in their content area by evaluating their students’ progress with Integrated Performance Assessments or IPAs. In a traditional IPA, the teacher selects a unit based theme and the students are assessed across the interpretive mode (reading and/or listening), interpersonal mode (speaking and listening), and presentational mode (speaking and/or writing).
The French, Italian, and Spanish Honor Societies are extracurricular academic organizations for students to further engage in the learning of World Languages.
All members of the World Language Department are committed to professional development and are encouraged to join professional organizations (FLENJ-Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey and ACTFL-American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language).
