Gifted and Talented / Enrichment Program

Grades K-8

The following policy is used by WWRSD: 2464 - GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS 

 In addition to accelerated learning and meeting the students' needs in the classroom, Westwood offers the following services for gifted students. 


Enrichment/Gifted and Talented Grades K-3

     The G&T teacher will provide whole class enrichment classes for the entire grade level population.  Classes will meet on a rotating basis once a week for approximately 8-10 weeks.  The activities will focus on six levels of thinking skills including deductive logic, inventive thinking, visual perception, analytical thinking, creative thinking and evaluative thinking.  The program follows the taxonomy outlined by Dr. Benjamin Bloom, presenting lessons in analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.  The entire class will be given the opportunity to experience the challenge of each thinking skill.


Pull-out Gifted and Talented classes grades 4 through 8

     Students are identified for the gifted and talented program using multiple measures including :

Students meet once a week.  The program is designed to focus on higher order thinking skills infused in problem based learning, research projects, science projects and experiments, analogies, and logic puzzles. Students are responsible to make up all missed work in their regular class.

Passion Project 

     The Passion Project is an independent study project offered to all students in grades 3-5.  This project is optional.  Students who are interested will sign a contract between their parents, themselves and the gifted and talented teacher to complete a project of their choice.  The project is done completely at home with guidance from the gifted and talented teacher and minimal assistance from parents.  This project offers an opportunity to go beyond the curriculum that is presented in class.  Emphasis is placed on creativity and originality.
