Board games provide tons of language practice because participants are required to recall, comprehend, follow directions, answer questions, use strategic, higher-order thinking skills, and describe. Here are some great games that you can have fun with while practicing your language skills at the same time!
Guess Who: perfect for working on asking/answering questions, describing skills, vocabulary usage, and reasoning skills
20 Questions: great for describing, deductive reasoning, and vocabulary
Scattergories: works on your ability to classify and organize items, which is great practice for word finding skills
Hed Banz: wonderful for working on asking/answering questions, describing, categories, and vocabulary
Apples to Apples: you can work on vocabulary, grammar, parts of speech, comparing/ contrasting and sentence structure while playing with a large group. This game also has a junior edition!
Taboo: perfect for working on describing, synonyms, and antonyms
Mad Libs: a great way to review parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs
