WWPS Post High School Financial Aid Support

Our Goal with Financial Aid Support: To make financial aid assistance available, confidential, safe, and intentional for all students regardless of socioeconomic or familial citizenship status

FAFSA and WASFA open October 1st

Rule of thumb: NEVER pay for FAFSA/WASFA... it's always free!

Order of Operation for Financial Aid:

1) Decide if you need to do FAFSA or WASFA

(if WASFA, please contact Katharine and/or use this resource)

FAFSA or WASFA Chart.pdf

2) Decide which parent to use for your FAFSA (Contact Katharine if you have questions)

3) Have parent (if they have a SSN) and student create an FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov. To do this, you'll need your social security number and paper/document to keep track of your passwords. If you have a sibling who has already gone to college, your parents probably have an FSA ID so you just need to make one for you (the senior)

4) Begin FAFSA! Using your 2019 taxes. You can fill it out using this movie or the slideshow below.

Frequently Asked Financial Aid Questions:

1) Financial Aid is a whole new language... do you have a dictionary?

Yes, in fact, we do! Check out this glossary!

2) My family's income is very different from 2019. What do I do?

Fill out the FAFSA/WASFA now and then contact schools to request an adjustment. Swift Student is a free tool for this that I highly recommend.

3) My parents don't have social security numbers. What do I do?

If you have a social security number, fill out the FAFSA after creating your FSA ID. Your parents don't need an FSA ID and they will need to put 000-00-0000 in for their social security number on the FAFSA itself. It will say there's an error but on the third try, it will go through. I promise.

4) I don't live with my parents. What do I do?

When you do the FAFSA, answer questions about dependency truthfully and it may have you fill it out as an independent student which means you don't have to use their information. Questions? Ask Katharine (kcurles@wwps.org)

5) What about scholarships?

Scholarships are important too!!! bit.ly/wahilist has a whole lot that I have vetted. Additionally, I recommend making accounts on washboard.org and scholarsapp.com. They will take the information you provide and match you with helpful scholarships.

CSS Profile

Is your school asking for a CSS Profile? The CSS is run by CollegeBoard (same as AP Tests and SATs). Many schools (often small, private) ask for it in order to receive a fuller picture of financial aid. The information is found here.
