Band is an excellent opportunity to develop one’s musical skills as well as one’s time-management and social skills. Learning an instrument is incredibly rewarding and has also been linked to higher performance in other classes. Students who participate in band often find a robust and fulfilling social experience that outlasts their participation, and involvement in extracurriculars helps students succeed even after high school. We work hard to make sure students are able to participate in band even if they are enrolled in athletics or any other extracurriculars. Our mission is to ensure that every student that has a desire to learn more about music has a place in our program, and that every student gets to experience the full benefit that learning an instrument could provide for them. Please feel free to reach out to Ms. Little or Mr. Chaffin if you have questions or if you would like to know more. We would love to have you in our program!
The flute is the highest instrument in the woodwind family. It is known for its beautiful high sound that soars above the rest of the ensemble. The flute is played by blowing air across the "embouchure hole" and pressing keys down to produce different notes.
The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. It is known for its ability to play fast passages and for its clear, resonant sound. A clarinet has a piece of wood, called a "reed" placed against the mouthpiece. It is played by blowing into the mouthpiece - causing the reed to vibrate - and covering holes to produce different notes.
The saxophone is a member of the woodwind family and is known for it's bright, "jazzy" sound. Like the clarinet, it has a reed attached to the mouthpiece that vibrates to create noise, and keys that are pressed to produce different notes.
The trumpet is the highest member of the brass family. It is known for its loud, vibrant sound and its ability to soar above an ensemble with fanfares and fast passages. The trumpet is played by "buzzing" the lips into the mouthpiece to create vibration, and pressing the valves in different combinations to produce different notes.
The trombone is a member of the brass family, known for its slide and its loud sound. The trombone is also played by "buzzing" the lips into the mouthpiece to create vibration, and the slide moves to different positions to produce different notes.
Percussion refers to all of the band instruments that are struck. Percussion instruments can either be rhythmic, meaning they're responsible for maintaining good timing; or melodic, like all of the 'wind' instruments in the band. Some examples of percussion instruments include the snare drum, the marimba, the timpani, and the cymbals.
