FAQs

"Study, find all the good teachers and study with them, get involved in acting to act, not to be famous or for the money. Do plays. It's not worth it if you are just in it for the money. You have to love it."

- Philip Seymour Hoffman

(American Actor, Director, and Producer)

What can my child take away/learn from the class?

In addition to performance and technical work and opportunities to explore all aspects of theatre, the program focuses on life long skills that will instill necessary values that will serve the students throughout their educational careers and beyond. For example, communication and presentation skills, time management, collaboration, cooperation, problem-solving skills, thinking outside the box, etc.

Why should students take Drama?

As William Bennet (Former US Secretary of Education) once said, "The arts are an essential element of education, just like reading, writing, and arithmetic...music, dance, painting, and theater are all keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment.” It is my belief that, by exposing students to other people’s perspectives, Drama gives them a broader understanding of the world. Additionally, involvement in drama courses and performance has been shown to improve students' self-esteem as well as their confidence in their academic abilities.

If I'm shy or inexperienced, can I still take the class?

Of course! All are welcome to participate in Drama. One of the building blocks of the class is encouraging students to come out of their shell in a safe and welcoming environment. No background is needed to join Drama 1. We work with the comfort level of all students in order to ensure their success.

What are the units of study in Drama?

Sample units include: ensemble building, acting styles/techniques/methods, improvisation, monologues, scenes, character analysis, theatre history, and playwriting.

Guests speakers - professionals in all aspects of the industry - are invited to speak with the class and share their experience/knowledge. (Based on their schedule availability)

Do I have to audition to be in Drama?

You do not need to audition to be in Beginning Drama or Stagecraft, but there is an audition for Advanced Drama (once you have completed Drama 1).

My student is creative and likes to write. How much creative freedom is there in this class?

Drama is 100% about creative freedom. Besides ensuring that everything is school appropriate, the students are given the freedom to think outside the box and put their own spin on whatever project they may be creating.
