Supported Internships are for 16 to 24-year-olds with special educational needs and disabilities who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Supported interns will be enrolled on a course at college but spend most of their learning time - typically around 70% - in a workplace on an industry placement. Supported Internships last for a minimum of 6 months, and up to a year.
The aim of Supported Internships are to enable young people with EHCPs to gain paid employment by supporting the development of the skills valued by employers and the development of confidence in the abilities needed to perform successfully at work.
Supported Interns complete a personalised study programme delivered in college, which includes the chance to study for relevant qualifications as well as English and maths. Students are supported on their industry placement by a trained job coach who provides in-work support that tapers off, if appropriate, as they become more familiar with their role.
