This year's Fall sports include volleyball, football, and cheer.
Vikings Cheer and Football
Chyanne Echeverria started SLAC in 2018, when she was a Sophomore in high school. SLAC stands for Student Leadership Advisory Committee. Members organize all of the student sections at sporting events, the dance last year during homecoming which ended in a concert. SLAC has overall improved WHS’s school culture and Viking Pride.
State wide, SLAC members are student athletes who have proved themselves as leaders in their school, and who the AIA has brought together to come up with ideas to improve high school spirit all over the state!
Chyanne states,”Every month or every couple of months we meet together to compete in school competitions like the school spirit videos, to frequently talk to the AIA executive board on changing rules and regulations, have close relations to Special Olympics, and represent Arizona on a national level every year at the National Student Leadership Conference where we strive to change the country.”
SLAC is about bringing school spirit, packing the stands, encouraging inclusiveness, and striving for great sportsmanship in the games. Chyanne states,” My advice is get a schedule for both the football and volleyball and come to the games. If you’re not an athlete, be a fan! We love supporting each other here at WHS that’s what makes us a Family! And don’t forget to mask up for the games!” If you would like to join SLAC go talk to Chyanne Echeverria or Preston Ford.

When asked about how cheer was going this year, cheer captain Avery said,” I’ve always enjoyed cheering. Last season was a little rocky but now that we have a new coaching staff. I have a lot of faith in this team. I am also very excited for this year’s season and team. We already have so much potential. ”
"This year spectators will witness new cheers and dances," Avery added. Cheer is planning crazy homecoming and senior night dances and to watch out for them.
This year they do plan on helping SLAC boost school spirit and spread the word about games. They are also going to another cheer competition called “Game Day!” We will have more details more about it when it gets closer. A goal from cheer captain Avery to the cheer team, “As being cheer captain my second year around I expect us to show everyone what school spirit looks like, how to be a leader, have positive attitudes, and have good teamwork/sportsmanship ”

Mrs. Stevens is looking forward to this season and coaching her teams. She would love to win state this year but her biggest priority is to play as a team and give it our all. She is enjoying this season a lot so far along with her team and who she has on her team. Mrs. Stevens also has everything figured out with all the new AIA rules. She has all the girls wearing masks at practice and following the rules on game day. She also asks the girls daily questions before practice like if we have a fever or cough. Also, for volleyball we can still travel and play other places we will just have to wear masks on the bus wherever we go. She can't wait to start playing games, which means getting closer to state. I had the chance to sit down with Mr. Brownlee, the head football coach at Williams High School, and asked him a few questions about returning to football this year. When asked about the restrictions for football this year, Coach Brownlee responded with, “Obviously with Covid-19 playing such a big factor not only in the nation, but in every football program across the nation, they put out restrictions as far as how many people you can have on the sideline." Coach continued by explaining the rules on the sidelines, "...with social distancing being 6 feet apart which allows the teams to spread from one 10 yard line to the 10 on the other side as before it was 25 to 25 in the box… Coaches still have to stay in the normal box." More rules affect the players such as "They (the players) cannot share a water bottle and there cannot be one place just to get water.” Brownlee goes on to say how, “If the players do not have their helmet on, they’ll have to be wearing a mask.” This year is definitely different considering all of these restrictions and all of these different rules that every team needs to follow. It may be a viewed as a pain, but everybody is ready to play and they are willing to follow these rules.
After talking about the rules and restrictions we turned the conversation towards how Mr. Brownlee feels about the team this year. He said that he is “very Optimistic about this team” and he is “very excited” for this year. “What’s fun is you’re bringing younger kids who haven’t played a main role and putting them in a major role to go out there and compete, and I think our team is going to do very well this year because we have quality athletes… We are really going to show a lot of people that we can still play quality ball.” Coach Brownlee is ready to get out there and play some football. The Viking have a scrimmage on this Friday, September 25th, against Desert Heights Prep. Then they will go on to play Bagdad, a big rivalry game to start off their season. Be sure that if you are attending any home games this year to remain socially distanced and wear your masks appropriately.
