The WUHSD Seal of Biliteracy and the CA State Seal of Biliteracy (marked by a gold seal on the diploma or transcript) is an award given in recognition of high school graduates who have studied and attained high levels of proficiency in two or more languages. The purpose of the WUHSD/CA Seal of Biliteracy is to encourage pupils to study languages, to certify attainment of biliteracy, to provide employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills, to provide universities with a method to recognize and give academic credit to applicants seeking admission, to prepare pupils with twenty-first century skills, to recognize and promote world language instruction in public schools, to strengthen intergroup relationships, to affirm the value of diversity, and to honor the multiple cultures and languages of a community.
