Our Purpose

The Puente Project is a four year, college preparatory program, sponsored by the UC Center for Educational Partnerships.  The mission of Puente is to increase the number of educationally underserved students who enroll in four-year universities, earn degrees, and return to the community as leaders and mentors to future generations.  The Puente Language Arts curriculum integrates multicultural literature and prepares students for college-level reading and writing.

How it works

Puente students stay in the English class with the same students and teachers for two years minimum. Cal High is unique in that we have the option to keep our students together all four years.

Puente students work closely with the Puente counselor to prepare and adhere to an academic four-year plan focused on college readiness.  Students participate in a variety of college and career themed workshops, social activities, college visits, and cultural field trips.  Parent participation in Puente activities and quarterly meetings is important to student success in the program.

Puente is a 4-year program that requires a 4-year commitment.  Therefore, once admitted, students are expected  to participate for their entire high school career and are unable to join any other academy or program offered at Cal High. However, students can join clubs and athletic programs, and are strongly encouraged to do so.
