Honor Society

Chinese Honor Society (CHS)

The Colonia High School Chinese Honor Society (CHS) recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in Chinese language studies while promoting an appreciation for Chinese language and culture. Our mission is to encourage academic excellence, cultural awareness, leadership, community service, global citizenship, and lifelong learning. Members participate in activities that support the use and study of Chinese both at Colonia High School and in the surrounding community.

Meetings

CHS will meet every other Monday from 2:30–3:00 PM in Room 216. Members are expected to attend meetings regularly and participate actively in Honor Society events, service projects, cultural activities, and fundraising opportunities.

Who Can Join?

To be eligible for membership, students must:

• Be a current Colonia High School student and be enrolled in Chinese Level 4 during the academic year of induction.

• Maintain at least an A- (90%) in Chinese for three consecutive semesters, including the semester of induction.

• Demonstrate good character, integrity, respect, cultural understanding, and responsible behavior while following school rules and policies.

• Receive a positive recommendation from the Chapter Advisor or a Chinese teacher.

• Demonstrate a commitment to promoting Chinese language and culture through leadership and service.

• Submit a completed CHS membership application, including a personal statement explaining their interest in Chinese studies and their goals as a member, along with a Chinese teacher recommendation.

How to Stay an Active Member

Once inducted, members are expected to remain in good standing throughout their membership. Members must:

• Attend regular CHS meetings, with no more than two unexcused absences per semester.

• Participate in at least one CHS-sponsored community service or cultural activity each semester.

• Complete at least 10 hours of community service each year, with service focused on Chinese cultural promotion or activities supporting the chapter's mission.

• Continue to meet the Honor Society's academic, behavioral, participation, and service standards.

• Continue to demonstrate good character and follow Colonia High School policies and CHS values.

• Meet required financial obligations unless a financial hardship waiver has been approved. New inductees have a $4 induction fee, and returning members have $10 annual dues.

Probation and Dismissal

Members who do not meet academic, behavioral, participation, or service requirements may be placed on probation for one semester and will be notified of what they must do to return to good standing.

Membership may be revoked if a student:

• Does not correct deficiencies during the probation period;

• Violates school policies or acts in a way that discredits CHS or Colonia High School; or

• Unenrolls from Chinese 4.

Graduation Recognition

Members who wish to receive CHS recognition at graduation must remain active through senior year. Among the requirements are completing at least 20 total community service hours during their CHS membership, attending at least 75% of CHS meetings during senior year, maintaining required academic standards, and continuing to demonstrate good character and leadership.

Members who remain in good standing and meet the graduation requirements may be eligible to wear the official CHS honor cord and pin as recognition of their achievement and commitment to Chinese language and culture.
