Celebrate Your Language Skills. Open Doors to the Future.
The Seal of Biliteracy is a prestigious recognition awarded by the State of New Jersey to students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language. At Woodbridge High School, we are proud to offer this opportunity to celebrate our students' language skills, cultural heritage, and academic achievement.
Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy will:
Receive a special certificate and graduation cords
Be recognized at graduation
Have the Seal included on their official high school transcript
This recognition highlights your ability to speak, read, write, and understand two or more languages — a skill highly valued by colleges, employers, and communities.
Why Is Earning the Seal of Biliteracy Important?
Proof of Bilingualism: Rather than simply saying "I'm bilingual," the Seal provides official recognition of your language abilities at an intermediate or advanced level.
College Advantage: Many colleges recognize the Seal for credit, placement, or to fulfill language requirements.
Career Readiness: Bilingual employees are in high demand across industries like healthcare, education, business, and government.
Cultural Pride: Celebrate your heritage and show pride in your language background.
You do not need to take a language class at WHS to qualify.
Students who speak a language at home — such as Arabic, Urdu, Polish, Portuguese, or any other — can take the Seal assessment in that language.
Last year (Class of 2025), over 60 students at WHS earned the Seal of Biliteracy by demonstrating proficiency in:
Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Portuguese, Urdu, Polish, and American Sign Language (ASL)
If you took the test as a junior and did not pass, don’t worry:
Review your score report carefully — it lists which of the four language modes (reading, writing, listening, speaking) need improvement.
Continue practicing in those areas.
You will have another opportunity to retake the assessment in your senior year.
