AP US History is a year-long course designed to provide students with the analytical skills and knowledge necessary to deal critically with United States History. The culminating activity is the Advanced Placement exam given in May and is necessary to take in order to earn the AP title on your transcript. Based on the score received, it is possible for students to earn college credit.
Students enrolled in this course should be strong writers as well as avid readers. This class is very time-consuming. In addition to an overview of American History, students learn the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment. Students will present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in an essay that requires outside reading in addition to the provided material. Furthermore, this course will prepare students for the rigours of college by stressing time management, reading comprehension, and advanced writing skills.
AP US History is a very manageable course if you approach it in the right way. It takes effort, but from past experience, I know that ALL students can be successful if they are willing to follow some basic steps to master the material. The assigned reading is a brief overview of the first periods of study in the AP US History curriculum. The reading is a summary and should be a review for you of the previous history covered in 8th grade and elementary school. You should not find this reading difficult, but you do want to master the content. Again, please note: This reading is not from your textbook for the year.
The APUSH course is a college-level survey of United States history and attempts to develop higher-level historical thinking skills by employing analysis and evaluation, primarily through formal essay writing. The Summer Assignment is designed to prepare you for what you will encounter in APUSH. I want to encourage you to get a good start for yourself by developing disciplined study habits now. It will make your life SO much easier next year.
Due to the tremendous amount of information covered in this course throughout the year, a summer assignment is a must. Complete the following homework before you return to school in September. All work must be original, using your own thoughts and words. Any form of plagiarism will result in an Academic Integrity Code infraction. NO AI and no copy/paste. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF UNTIL THE LAST WEEK OF SUMMER.
