Reading with your child

This is how you can help your child at home while reading. Discuss what was read and use the following questions as a guideline.

1. What part of the story was your favorite and why?

2. If you could talk to the main character, what advice would you give?

3. What new word did you read today and how will you use it?

4. Who is telling the story and how do you know?

5. What do you think the main character might do next? Explain.

6. Describe a choice the main character makes. Would you have made the same choice? Explain.

7. Would this story make a good movie or TV show? Why?

8. Describe the story’s problem. How would you solve the problem?

9. Name 2 reasons you do or do not like the main character. Explain your answer by giving examples of the character’s actions.

10. How is the main character changing in the story? What causes the change?

11. How does the story make you feel? How does the author make you feel this way?

12 .Do any of the characters remind you of someone you know? Explain.

13. What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?

14. Could you make up another ending?

15. Why do you think the author wrote this story?

16. Would you recommend this story to a friend? Why or why not?

17. Can you retell or summarize the story in your own words?
