What is Hour of Code?

Hour of Code is an opportunity for every student to learn the basic concepts of Computer Science with this drag and drop programming. This year our class will join millions of students around the world and participate in the Hour of Code as we celebrate Computer Science during the week of December 5th-11th

Anybody can learn to code so why not start now? Click on 'HOC Overview' to access the most up-to-date activities from code.org.

In 2019, code.org added lessons about Artificial Intelligence or AI. Click the video button to learn how Artificial Intelligence is being used to improve people’s daily lives.

When you're ready to try programming with Artificial Intelligence, click on the button 'AI for Oceans'.

Beyond the Hour of Code

If you've enjoyed HOC activities and are ready to begin writing your own code, be sure to check out this resource I received from a fellow superstar coder, Alexa. It has a ton of kid friendly coding tutorials as well as info about how to become a software engineer for any students who are curious.

Some of my favorites from this link are:

Interested in a career as a computer software engineer?  Check out 'Quick Facts' tabs to get more details.

Looking for something else to try? Try Apple's newest coding platform, Swift Playground! It works on your iPad and has 3D technology to really make you feel like you are inside the game! Start by learning the basics and guiding the main character, Byte, through different stages. There are also lots of other games to practice and play with. Download the app for FREE and give it a try!

Other Websites & Coding Apps

Lightbot is a great FREE APP for any device. It starts with super basic programming for kids 4+. Learn how to sequence commands, identify patterns, use procedures, and utilize loops.

Another favorite of mine is an APP called Kodable. This is a FREE, kid-friendly introduction to programming concepts and problem solving. It is great for all students ages 5 and up. Go ahead and give it a try. Help the fuzzFamily who crashed their spaceship on Smeeborg and explore the planet's Technomazes! Don't worry, even if is seems easy at first, it will get more challenging as you begin to learn about "If/Then" statements and add loops.

Another great site is Tynker. Here you will find a collection of fun activities for children of all ages to try programming. Solve a series of simple puzzles to help the puppy reach home, and Biff the spaceman reach his moon base. When you are ready for more, you can build the Space Zombies game or even create Math Art.
