12 Quick Tips for Parents

  • Establish a good relationship with your child's teachers with open lines of communicaion.

  • Schedule and attend parent/teacher conferences with your child's teachers to discuss performance in the classroom.

  • Take time to talk to your child. Each day talk with your child about what he/she did at school. Ask questions that encourae conversation with your child, rather then a simple yes/no answer.

  • Read daily with your child. Set time aside each day to listen to your child read or read a book with your child. If you are listening to your child read, be encouraging and patient if he is struggling. We don't want the child to become too frustrated and give up on reading. If you are reading to your child,pause during the story to ask questions about what you are reading.

  • Talk with your child about the new words he/she recieved each week.

  • Designate a place to keep all information and communications from school, whether it be a box, crate or file.

  • Talk to your child about how important it is to go to school daily, being prepared each day and doing their best.

  • Review and discuss with your child all assignments sent home from school showing acedemic performance.

  • Closely monitor how much TV your child is watching and how much time is spent playing video games. Try and replace these activities with talking and other family activities.

  • Review weekly/daily assignments and/or planners sent home with your child. Take the time to help them complete their assignments daily.

  • Make sure to encourage and show them how proud you are of them and that you will be there thelp them succeed in school.

  • Make sure your child gets a good nights rest before school the next morning.
