Children use the number line to count and compare numbers.
Lesson 1.3- Tools for Doing Mathematics
Children explore tools for counting and reasoning about the attributes of shapes. They learn a counting game.
Lesson 1.4- Counting Strategies
Day 1: Children solve an open response problem by estimating and counting collections of counters.
Day 2: Children discuss and learn from other children’s strategies, then use a new strategy to count a different set of counters.
Lesson 1.5- 1 More, 1 Less
Children use the number line to tell and solve number stories and to play a game that prepares them for adding and subtracting within 20.
Lesson 1.6- Comparing Numbers
Children learn more about comparing and ordering numbers.
Lesson 1.7- Organizing Data in a Tally Chart
Children use tally marks to represent data and to practice counting by 5s and 1s.
Lesson 1.8- More Organizing Data
Children practice counting and representing data in tally charts. They answer questions about data, including addition and subtraction questions.
Lesson 1.9- Exploring Math Materials
Children explore pattern blocks, base-10 blocks, and geoboards in preparation for reasoning about shapes and their attributes.
Lesson 1.10- Number Stories
Children tell and solve number stories to practice adding and subtracting within 20.
Lesson 1.11- Counting Larger Numbers
Children navigate the number grid to prepare for adding and subtracting large numbers.
