April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse

On April 8th 2024 we will be able to witness a near total solar eclipse here in Long Valley. This webpage provides a few resources that explain this natural phenomenon and how to safely view a solar eclipse.  Since Long Valley is not in the path of totality, we will not witness a total solar eclipse, but closer to a 90% shadow.  This will still be very cool to witness, but it also means that it will not be safe to look at the sun at all during this event.

The eclipse will begin about 2:10 PM in Long Valley and we will experience maximum totality at about 3:25 during dismissal. This is when most of the Sun will be blocked by the moon. Totality will end about 3:58 PM.

CAUTION

DO NOT look directly at the Sun as the Sun's rays can cause serious eye injury.

DO NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.
