This micro-credential awards a graduate half-credit for demonstrating proficiency in the instructional practice of recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior and academic progress. Evidence of proficiency must be demonstrated in three areas: Knowledge, Implementation, and Reflection.

Participants may engage with resources and activities described below at their own pace throughout the course term. All are advised to refer to key dates and deadlines for submission and to plan their learning activities within these constraints.

Objective: After engaging with the curated resources from the WSWSU Fundamental Five companion site, demonstrate your proficiency in knowledge about recognizing and reinforcing student behavior and academic progress by submitting evidence of your critical engagement with at least two curated resources on the webpage linked above.

Proficient knowledge in recognize & reinforce as an instructional practice includes:

• Identifying why "recognize and reinforce" is a high yield instructional practice
• Identifying key strategies for making recognition and reinforcement effective (e.g., personal & specific)
• Understanding how to use language and non-verbal communication strategically to engage students with recognition and reinforcement
• Understanding how recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior and academic progress affects classroom management and learning
• Analyzing how to address the needs of struggling students through strategic use of recognize and reinforce

Recommended Evidence Types (choose one or more):

• Critical writing response(s) with specific references to text or video
• Notes from face-to-face workshops or book study discussions on recognize & reinforce
• Resource Annotation (e.g., insightful comments on digital stickies)
• Video Annotation ( through time coded notes, or use VideoAnt)

Objective: Demonstrate your proficiency in recognize & reinforce as an instructional practice by submitting evidence of the following:

1. your use of key strategies for making recognition and reinforcement effective
2. instructional coaching, mentoring, or peer observation cycle on your use of recognize & reinforce practices in your classroom (pre-obs, observation & debrief).

Proficient implementation of recognize & reinforce as an instructional practice includes:

• Applying strategies to maximize efficacy of recognition and reinforcement, such as,
  • Giving students specific and personal recognition and reinforcement immediately
  • Balancing behavioral and academic recognition and reinforcement
  • Giving frequent recognition and reinforcement for positive behaviors and achievement (5:1 positive to negative comments, and 6+ praise statements per 15 minutes, is a rock star!)
  • Using eye contact and positive affect when giving recognition and reinforcement
• Analyzing how to employ strategies for recognizing and reinforcing to enhance behavior management in my classroom
• Creating a plan for using recognize and reinforce to meet the specific academic and behavioral needs of diverse learners

Objective: Demonstrate your proficiency in reflective practice by sharing a reflection on your growth and/or mastery of "recognize & reinforce," and evaluate the practice for impacting student learning using student reflections.

Proficient reflective practice in recognize and reinforce includes:

• Self-evaluation of your own implementation of recognize & reinforce
• Evaluating the quality and effectiveness of offering frequent reinforcement and recognition on student behavior and learning
• Evaluating the quality and effectiveness of specific strategies for improving teaching efficacy of recognizing and reinforcing student behavior and academic progress
• Analyzing student reflections for evidence of how recognition and reinforcement impacts their learning

Recommended Evidence Types:

• Teacher's Written or Video Reflection discussing the strengths and challenges of recognizing and reinforcing positive behavior and academic progress
  • refer to specific examples of your practice
  • discuss your growth in implementing strategies for maximizing teaching efficacy of recognition and reinforcement
• Student Written, Video or Audio Reflections describing how they respond to your use of recognition and reinforcement in relation to their learning in your classroom
