About

Ms. Kate Plows teaches photography and video within the arts department at Strath Haven High School, where she also advises student journalism via the newspaper and yearbook

Before beginning her time at Strath Haven in fall 2018, she spent over a decade teaching high school students patience, problem-solving, and self-expression through the mediums of ceramics, photography, graphic design, and journalism. Much of her recent personal art practice has been in collaboration with her students, exploring ideas of voice, shared experience, and social justice.

She earned her BFA in painting and her masters in teaching art education. She has led student services programs at the assistant director level or higher at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts. She has dual certification in K-12 Art and Secondary English.

In 2018, she was the Pennsylvania Journalism Teacher of the Year, a National JEA Rising Star, and a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Special Recognition Adviser. In 2020-2021, she was a member of the inaugural cohort of The New York Times Teaching Project. Participation in the Teaching Project led to a lesson byline at New York Times Learning. She serves as member of the executive board at Pennsylvania School Press Association.

In what little spare time she has, she enjoys reading, writing, photography, hiking, freelance design, throwing pots, and spending time with the world’s most patient dog.
