The "Breaking Barriers: Academic Success for Students Experiencing Homelessness” half-day training is designed to equip educators, administrators, counselors, and support staff with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to support McKinney-Vento eligible students. In the United States, more than 1.5 million students experience homelessness each year, facing unique challenges that significantly impact their education and well-being. This interactive session begins with an overview of the McKinney-Vento Act, emphasizing the rights and protections guaranteed to students experiencing homelessness, and provides insight into the various forms of homelessness, including families living in shelters, motels, doubled-up situations, or unsheltered.
Participants will then explore how housing instability affects academic performance, attendance, mental health, and social-emotional well-being. Through case studies and group discussions, they will learn to recognize the signs that a student may be experiencing homelessness. The training will also cover practical strategies for creating inclusive, trauma-informed classrooms, emphasizing the importance of fostering a sense of belonging, maintaining consistency, and building trust with students whose lives may feel unpredictable. Additionally, educators will learn how to advocate for students by collaborating with families and community partners to remove educational barriers, including connecting students with resources like transportation, tutoring, and basic needs.
The session also features hands-on activities, including role-playing and scenario analysis, allowing participants to practice addressing common challenges faced by homeless students, such as transportation issues, lack of documentation, and school enrollment difficulties.
