Dear Families,

Reading aloud with your child for just 15 minutes a day can make a big difference in their language and literacy development. We are encouraging families to make this a habit. We have a wonderful public library in Guilford if you are looking for reading material.

We are fortunate to be able to work with the librarian there, Amber Hunt. Amber is Joan’s mom and she will be coming to read with us in our classroom once a week on Wednesdays. We are hoping to be able to walk to the library and be read to there as well!

We’ve had a fun and busy week in Kindergarten! Here are some of the exciting things we’ve been doing and learning together:

Salsa Making

Our class harvested fresh ingredients from our garden and made salsa together. The kids loved chopping, mixing, and of course, tasting! In your child’s folder you will find the recipe that we used with Farmer Sarah.

EL

We’ve been talking about how to play together and how to use our classroom materials respectfully and creatively. Learning through play helps build cooperation, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Math
This week, we practiced looking for groups of objects — an early math skill that helps us with sorting, counting, and beginning addition. Next week we will start a math skills time. We will focus on number ID, number writing within 10, counting, and subitizing.

UFLI

We’re learning the sound and correct letter formation for A. Ask your child to show you how we write it and say the sound it makes!

 What Are Heart Words?
We’ve started learning about heart words — special words we need to "know by heart" because they don’t always follow regular spelling rules. This week’s word was “the” — and we practiced reading and spelling it in fun ways!

Trash Sorting Activity
We explored how much trash our school produces in one day by sorting and weighing it. This sparked a great conversation about reducing waste, recycling, and taking care of our Earth.

Open House on Thursday, the 25th-

We can’t wait to see you at the open house on Thursday the 25th from 5:30-6:30 . Come see your child’s work, explore our classroom, meet other families, and grab a taco!

This coming Friday the 26th is an early release day. Pick up for your child is 11:40. Wishing you all a great weekend!

Thanks,

Maggie
