The 5th and 6th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies curricula are designed to engage students with local and global communities through a variety of literature, non-fiction, and research projects that use a range of primary and secondary sources.
While 5th graders do not often have homework beyond the district-wide expectation of 20 minutes of independent reading each night, we will have several projects throughout the year that may require at-home time as well as regular class time to complete. Families will receive advanced notice when such projects arise.
6th graders are also expected to read independently for 20 minutes each night, and will also regularly complete other homework assignments that may add up to 30 minutes of work daily. This extra homework expectation is designed to prepare them to enter middle school, where one or more hours of homework is a daily expectation. When extra assignments are given, they will be added to the homework calendar on this page.
