Math: This week, students will take their Math iReady Diagnostic as well as begin Unit 1 - Whole NUmbers: Volume, Multiplication and Division. The focus of this week will be learning how to multiply multi-digit numbers. Students will review and learn new strategies for multiplying multi-digit numbers using the area model, partial products and traditional/standard algorithm methods.
Social Studies: In Social Studies, students will continue Unit 1: Chapter 9 - Civil War and Reconstruction. This week, the focus will be on analyzing the underlying causes of the Civil War and learning about the Dred Scott case.
Writing: This week’s writing focus will be on identifying and understanding the various parts of speech within sentences. We will concentrate on practicing adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions.
Reading: This week in reading, students will continue to learn about the Greek and Latin roots hydr, mer/mar, and aqu (water and sea). They will also focus on how to identify cause and effect relationships with a text and the author's perspective. This week students will also learn how to write about their reading at the 5th grade level. Our weekly reading logs will begin on Friday, so be on the lookout!
Science: In Science this week, we will continue to work in Unit 21: From Sun to Food. We will wrap up lesson 1 over how the flow of energy is needed for all living things to survive. Later in the week we will begin lesson 2, which will have students analyze what plants need in order to grow.
