GRADE 5 - CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
2023– 2024
Mr. Leochko
As we recognize different teaching styles, we also recognize and respect student’s learning styles. Therefore, while all units of study are curriculum based, subjects may be integrated and expanded or modified. For example, Social Studies or Science topics incorporate many Language Arts activities. The following curriculum overview lists a variety of areas from which topics may be selected.
LANGUAGE ARTS
The Language Arts program is directly related to all areas of student’s education because they are all affected by a student’s ability to use and to understand language.
The major goals of the Language Arts program are:
· to read and summarize narrative texts, and to recognize and explain the authors ideas,
· to increase the student’s ability to use language for a variety of purposes and
· to promote the growth of the student’s thinking skills such as planning, predicting, explaining, comparing, analyzing, evaluating, reading and writing.
Language objectives are met through many language activities such as: individual reading; literature study groups; instruction in reading, writing, handwriting and spelling skills; discussion groups presentations; research projects; and daily writing.
MATHEMATICS
The math curriculum is divided into four strands or major areas:
1. number concepts and operations – deepen student confidence and understanding of number
2. patterns and relations – describe the world and solve problems using patterns
3. shape and space (geometry and measurement) – use direct or indirect measurement to solve problems; and describe characteristics of 3-D and 2-D shapes and analyze their relationships
4. statistics and probability – collect, display and analyze data to solve problems
The emphasis throughout the Math program is on thinking skills such as problem solving, estimating, reasoning, data analysis, communication, and making connections. Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, and is based on daily work, group projects and teacher observations.
