It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Students: I cannot wait to get to know you. We are going to have an amazing year.
In order to create a safe and enjoyable learning environment, students are expected to behave safely and respectfully. The following rules have been set by our classroom. Please make sure to discuss these rules with your child:
Be respectful
Be safe
Be a good listener
Be honest
Be helpful
Have fun
Assessment
At the beginning of the school year and throughout the year, students will take part in individual and group activities that allow the teacher to learn about student strengths and areas that need further assistance. Students will also be maintaining a year-long portfolio in which they will self-assess their learning and set goals for their next steps.
Language Arts
In English Language Arts, we will strengthen our reading and writing abilities. Students will take part in both Writer’s and Reader’s Workshops. During our writer’s workshop program, students will focus on writing narrative, informational and persuasive pieces. Students will explore writing through mini lessons about the 6 Traits of writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency and Conventions), the use of writing samples, and practice a variety of types of writing.
During the reader's workshop, students will be given opportunities to develop the skills needed to become successful readers. We will focus on many comprehension strategies, specifically predicting, creating mental images, asking questions, and making connections to our own experiences and other texts . As we explore different genres, authors and texts, there will be opportunities for students to read and respond to picture books, information books, chapter books and non-fiction both independently and in groups. Guided reading groups will occur throughout the year at the students’ instructional reading levels.
Students will complete word study work to assist with spelling, grammar and the understanding of the regularities, patterns and conventions of the English language.
Mathematics
Room 33 students will have a very hands-on experience in math this year. We will learn and practice math skills using math centres, problems, and math games.
Our Math program will spiral throughout the year with a focus on number sense, mental math and problem solving. Students will continue to develop their understanding and skills with respect to number sense, place value, operations, decimals, fractions, measurement and statistics. Through journaling, daily problems, basic facts practice and small group guided discussions, students will be able to show their learning and understanding, as well as set goals for their next steps in learning. Students will practice and use math talk to share their strategies and personal understanding of specific topics, questions or problems. Students will continue to build and develop their mental math strategies.
21st Century Learning
It is important that along with the curriculum, students are learning skills that will help them be successful in this rapidly changing world. Our school is focusing on the 6 C’s of learning which include Collaboration (teamwork), Communication (sharing of ideas), Creativity, Critical Thinking, Curiosity and Citizenship. Room 33 will have many opportunities on a daily basis to practice these skills along with the areas of problem solving and digital literacy. They will learn through instant challenges, drama activities, tech time, group work and many more activities.
Health
We will be starting with the topic of growth mindset and the Zones of Regulation, which will help develop an awareness of our feelings, energy and alertness levels. Our year will also include learning about making safe choices outside school and online.
Physical Education, Music and Outdoor Education
Students will regularly attend gym and music classes throughout the year. Music is scheduled 2 times per cycle and Phys-Ed is scheduled 3 times per cycle. T
Home Reading
Starting mid-September we will begin a home reading program in which students will take home books to read each night. Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 – 30 minutes per night. Please help your student remember to read and to return their home reading bags each day.
Social Studies
Grade 3 students explore ways of life in selected communities of the world, past and present. They are introduced to world geography, and they enrich their appreciation of global diversity as they explore communities and cultures. Through this exploration, students discover the connections linking diverse communities, past and present, and develop an appreciation of the enduring contributions of communities of the world.
Science
It is important in Science that the students get the opportunity to explore and discover. This year in Science, the students will be learning about: Forces that Attract/Repel, Structures, Plants and Soils. Due to the “hands-on” nature of the topics we will be covering this year, I will be incorporating inquiry and teaching the students about the design process.
Attendance
It is important that students attend school on a regular basis and that they are on time. When students miss important instructions in class it is difficult for them to understand information at a later date. Please make sure your child attends every day.
I look forward to an exciting and rewarding year with your child! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call, email or drop by!
