Welcome Back to School! (Sept/Oct): During this time period, I am getting to know the students, build community and assess what they know. This helps me program for the rest of the year and meet them where they are at in their learning. Sometimes, there may be some learning loss over the 2 months of summer break. In the beginning of the school year, typically we spend time reviewing some content from grade 2 (mostly in math and language arts). This helps them feel confident in the classroom as it is familiar to them, but also lets me know the skills they have, and who may need extra support. In these first 2 months of school I also spend a lot of time teaching the students about Growth Mindset and that is ok to make mistakes because "mistakes help us learn". This enables us to move through the school year not worrying about if they can't do something...YET.
Our programs are based on the content in the curriculum guides as set out by the Department of Education.
*Note: this overview is flexible and subject to change depending on the learning of the students*
LANGUAGE ARTS
Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to:
o Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences
o Comprehend and response to a variety of text
o Organize ideas and information
o Communicate and present information
o Celebrate and build community by sharing ideas with others and appreciating others point of view
Please encourage your child to read daily for at least 20-30 minutes. It is also important for your child to read aloud to a family member at home for at least 10 minutes a night to develop fluency in their oral reading. Once the book has been read, please take time to discuss the story with your child. Here are some questions to ask:
1. Who is (are) the main characters in the story?
2. Are any of the main characters like you or someone you know? What makes you think so?
3. Describe your favourite character in the story and tell me why he/she is your favourite.
4. Where and when do you think the story takes place? Why do you think so?
5. What is the funniest/scariest/best part of the story?
6. Is there a problem in the story? How does it get solved?
7. Would any of your friends/family enjoy this book? Why or why not?
8. Could you come up with another good title for this book? What would it be? Why would you choose this title?
9. Do you think this book would make a good movie? Why or why not?
10. What if you could change the ending, what would it be?
11. What does this story remind you of? (making personal connections)
12. Retell the story in detail using the beginning, middle and end.
MATHEMATICS
Students will:
o Use mental calculations, or mental math strategies to determine answers to facts
o Communicate their thinking when solving problems
Many of the units that are learned in grade 3 rely on students having automatic recall of addition and subtraction facts to 20. Please encourage your child to practice their math facts at home on a weekly basis so that they are prepared for adding and subtracting larger numbers. Here are a few activities you can practice with your child at home. You can pick up dice, a deck of cards and flash cards from the dollar store to help build their math number sense.
o Flip two or three cards from a deck and add them together
o Roll two or three dice and add them together
o Flip a card or roll a die and subtract from the number from 20
