Grade 4/5 Program 2022-2023


Language Arts


The Language Arts program is designed to provide students with opportunities to engage in reading, writing, speaking, viewing and representing to share ideas, feelings and experiences and think critically through the use of literature positive conversations which helps to build a sense of community.

Reading Strategies to focus on:

  • MAKE CONNECTIONS- make connections to self, to text and to the world
  • PREDICTIONS- using clues in text, make a guess or prediction what may happen next in text
  • INFERRING- using background knowledge and clues in text to understand text more deeply
  • CLARIFY- questioning, does the text make sense, what are the difficult words or ideas, 
  • SUMMARIZE- Identify the main events of the text, what is the message the author is trying to tell us
  • QUESTIONING- Ask questions before, during, after reading




In grade 4 we will focus on 3 different types of writing (Creative Narratives, How To Informational Writing, and Persuasive Writing).  With each type of writing we will focus on using the 6+1 Traits of writing:


IDEAS- focus and develop an idea in writing that offers a main theme and a story lineORGANIZATION- the structure of writing and the ability to organize ideas and have a good sense of sequenceVOICE-writer's create a message that is clear and provides an emotional response to the readerWORD CHOICE-using words that help add details in writing, evoke feeling and creates a vivid picture in the readers mindSENTENCE FLUENCY-rhythm and flow of the language in writing, using a variety of sentences lengthsCONVENTIONS- mechanics of writing (capitalization, punctuation, grammar, paragraph writing)




MATHEMATICS


The four strands of the curriculum are:

1) Number (Develop Number Sense)

2) Patterns and Relations (Use patterns to describe the world and solve problems)

3) Shape and Space (Measurement/3D-2-D Shapes)

4) Statistics and Probability (Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems)


Students will be engaged in Math talks, open-ended math tasks that will foster problem solving, estimating, reasoning, data analysis, communication, and making connections. 


SCIENCE

In science our focus will be on using Scientific Inquiry, The Design Thinking Process and STEAM activities to support topics covered in 



SOCIAL STUDIES

The main topics in Social Studies this year will be on:


Art Program

There are 3 areas in Art (Visual Art, Dance and Drama)  that offers  students to ability to create, connect, and respond to various art forms

Health

The areas of focus will be on Personal and Social Management, Safety and Healthy Lifestyle Practices
