Newsela

Explanation: Newsela is a site that features short informational articles in all content areas. These articles can be viewed in several different lexile levels so that all students can understand the content no matter what their reading level. This site has recently been approved by Weber School District, so students can sign in and read an article that you assign or choose a topical article to read. Newsela also works with Google Classroom so that teachers can seamlessly assign articles to students using Classroom. Note: The Newsela site has free information and an option for paid subscriptions. Everything described on this page refers to the free information offered at the Newsela site.

Benefits:

Students can choose a lexile level for reading various articles.
Articles are current and interesting.
Articles take no longer than 8 minutes to read.
Writing prompts and questions can be found for each article.
Text sets are available and arranged based on themes. While not every article is available in the "free" version, some articles are available as well as unit hooks, supporting questions and essential questions.
Teachers can assign specific articles to Google Classroom. Articles can be assigned to the class as a whole, or the teacher can assign a student an article based on the student reading level.
